Brix

Brix Testing

Brix testing is a fundamental quality control parameter used in the analysis of molasses, particularly when molasses is used as an energy source and palatability enhancer in animal feed. The Brix value represents the percentage of total soluble solids present in molasses, which primarily consist of sugars such as sucrose, glucose, and fructose, along with soluble minerals and organic compounds. Accurate Brix determination is essential for evaluating the concentration, consistency, and nutritional value of molasses supplied to feed manufacturing units.

The Brix test is based on the measurement of the refractive index of molasses using a refractometer. When light passes through a molasses solution, it bends (refracts) in proportion to the concentration of dissolved solids present. The refractive index is directly converted into degrees Brix (°Bx), which indicates the percentage by weight of soluble solids in the sample. For accurate results, temperature correction is applied as refractive index varies with temperature.
