Crude Fat

Crude Fat/Ether Extract

Crude fat in cattle feed is a measure of total fat-soluble substances, a vital, concentrated energy source, providing essential fatty acids and aiding fat-soluble vitamin absorption (A, D, E, K). It provides significantly more energy (2.25x) than carbohydrates or protein. Supplies vital fatty acids and helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Improves feed palatability, reduces dust, and supports coat shine. High-yielding dairy cows need increased fat to meet energy demands, influencing milk fat content.

Methods:

Determining crude fat in cattle feed typically uses solvent extraction, most commonly the Soxhlet method, involving sample drying, extraction with a solvent like n-hexane, solvent removal, drying the residue, and weighing the extracted fat, with calculations based on initial and final weights to find the percentage.
