Sugar (Molasses)

Sugar Content

Sugar testing is a critical quality evaluation parameter used in the analysis of molasses, especially when molasses is utilized as an energy-rich ingredient in animal feed. Molasses primarily contains sugars such as sucrose, glucose, and fructose, which contribute significantly to its nutritional value and palatability. Accurate determination of sugar content is essential for assessing molasses quality, energy contribution, and consistency, ensuring its suitability for feed formulation and animal nutrition.

Sugar content in molasses is determined using chemical or instrumental methods depending on the type of sugar being measured. Total sugars and reducing sugars are commonly analyzed using titrimetric methods such as the Lane-Eynon method or spectrophotometric techniques. Sucrose content is often calculated after inversion of sugars. The results are expressed as a percentage by weight, reflecting the concentration of sugars present in the molasses sample.
